Sri,

If you look closely at some of the letters being bantered back and forth
you will notice that Esther Dyson's address is in Marina Del Rey,
California. Although I have not heard them referenced in a while, Los
Nettos in in Marina Del Rey. Los Nettos is USC. Now things change and that
may not be the way it is anymore, but since I've always been a mariner,
I've had a few sailing vessels kept and even lived on a couple in MDR. So,
naturally, since it was a backbone operation Los Nettos used to be my ISP.

USC proper is right off Exposition Boulevard and the Harbor Frewweay
(I-110) just due south of Downtown LA. Marina Del Rey is West of that by
just a few miles at the ocean.

ISI.EDU is USC. Jon Postel ran (well, alot of things) ISI pretty much and
also the .US cctld from a cozy little corner in MDR. Beautiful place
( Largest man-made harbor still I believe.).

Okay, geographically anyway, that brings you up to speed. It's a freaken
joke if you ask me. Why not Moscow ( I won't go there). but seriously, Why
not the San Diego SuperComputer Center? Or why not UCSB or Stanford or UCLA
or U of Utah who were the original hosts on the ARPANET?

I think the answer is a power thing. These people want to seize control and
put it into a corner that has been traditionally a power center on the net
- a percieved power, that is. It's a little "Good ol boys" club that has
existed for years.

Remember though, that Congressman Blileys letter to Secretary Daley and
ICANN is called a "Congressional" in Civil Service terms. IS part of law
and Compells these brigands to respond satisfactorilly to every single
point addresses in his letters. No compromise. Back in my DOD days working
on ARPANET and MILNET we had a few of these, and I assure you almost
everything stops and the priority turns to getting the Congressman or
Senator placated, and off your back. I don't personally think that
placation is going to do it here though, and the July deadline will
effectively stop any movement for the time being by ICANN or the Dept of
Commerce as they do not want to do anything to rock the boat and make it
worse.

This dismally resounding article may be just what the doctor ordered, for
who knows how this might inflame the situation in the congressional
investigation. A blessing in disguise have you. the media has always been
pretty good at stirring up the doggy doo after it starts to form a crust
and stop stinking. and we all know that if you do that it starts to stink
again.

Some of the specific points Congressman Bliley is asking is, "Did you
threaten a legit registrar (Only one but besides the point)? "Was there a
rep from the Commerce Dept there, and If so, why did that government
official fail to stop this if it infact occurred?

"Do you believe you have the authority to do this? If so, Where do you
think you got this authority and do you think they had the authority to
giive it to you?

"Are you a renegade maverick organization operating outside the terms of
your charter?"

"Are you really trying to steal peoples money?"

All this paraphrased of course, but accurate as far as I'm concerned.

So, I honestly think we are in a holding pattern at this point and may find
for ourselves that we have the greatest opportunity to move our agenda
forward while ICANN is somewhat paralyzed by this threat of extinction.

One thought though, How many besides myself sent this news story to your
reps in the Senate and the House? But ever so gently now.
