How many people outside New Zealand would actually recognise the
kiwi from a picture? I suspect that the majority of people in the
world wouldn't.
I remember when I arrived in England from New Zealand at the tender age
of eight, pretty much nobody I met knew where New Zealand was, never mind
what it's national bird looked like. "Nobody I met" in this context is
unreasonably skewed towards a sample population largely consisting of
eight year-olds, of course :)
But from the baffled responses I get every week making support calls to
callcentres in the US [*], I suspect that large sections of the globe
would remain happily unaware of the New Zealandness of the icon.
