Subject: Individual Property Owners

Hi Sri -- I've been thinking about your proposed name change all
morning.In fact, I've done a complete flip-flop.

Since I'm at work and can't post to the list, here's my reaction: feel
free to quote and cut if you want
to reply via the list.

I really like the idea of having a direct contrast of Individual
Property vis-a-vis Intellectual Property.
It just might give us more legitimacy in some circles (e.g., the Board)
by helping us to assert that we have co-equal property rights.

Here's what strikes me as a potential negative in the name: it sounds
like we're now playing their game of duelling property rights. It could
make us vulnerable to characterization that we, like they, are engaged in
the colonization of cyberspace -- actively dividing up territory to be
bought and sold.

I see IDNO as the exact opposite: that we want to affirm solidarity
with all of the individuals -- which means people and businesses who have
voluntarily contributed to the creation of the NET through cooperation
and the desire to further it as a new vehicle of human communciation. Which
to me also means
(though Karl Auerbach gets the last word here), that we want to stake a
position as being opposed to the "break-up" of the Net , being opposed
to
alienating all the individuals who keep the DNS functioning, and being
opposed in general to the creation of new property rights in cyberspace.

I think it's very possible that by incorporating Property into our name,
we
just might give up some valuable
associations like this.

Waddya think?
