I'm confused, too. You said "Whenever I receive anything from you on
e-mail having to do with the web there is never any text", but I just
can't figure out what you mean. I'm not being cute, Theresa -- I
actually just don't know what you mean. For example, you could
certainly say that my last email to you on this topic had to do with
the web, but apparently you could read it. On the other hand, if a
message is only composed of meaningless letters and numbers, how can
you tell it is a message that has to do with the web?

Perhaps if I ask some specific questions I can come to a better
understanding:

1) I gather that some of the messages you can read, but some of them you
can't. Is that correct?

2) Are there messages that contain both meaningful text and meaningless
letters and numbers, in separate sections? Or are the two kinds of
messages completely separate?

3) Do the garbage messages look more like a) or b) or c) or d)below
(note that all of these more or less fit your description of "letters
and numbers" -- actually, there are many kinds of email messages fit
that description). Or does the meaningless "letters and numbers" look
different from any of these? If so, could you PLEASE send me a sample.
Type it in by hand, if you have to.

Note that all three of these samples are very different in style,
they all are largely composed of "letters and numbers", and they all
are possible contents of mail messages.

4) At the very bottom of your home page is an email link. It looks like this:

e-mail: baja@songbird.com

except that the "baja@songbird.com" is probably underlined. If you
click on that underlined part you should be able to send yourself a
mail message, through the web page. Have you tried this experiment?
If not, please do. Let me know what happens when you tried it.

5) How many of these "letters and numbers" messages have you
received, exactly? Do you still get them? Do you get them from
anyone but me? How is it that you determine that they are from me?

To summarize, Theresa, I am genuinely puzzled: I have extensively
tested your setup. I have sent messages through to you and
intercepted them every step, and they are all clean. When I
substitute my address for yours in the chain, I get good messages. In
general, I receive literally thousands of emails a month, and send
maybe 50 a week, to people all over the world and with all kinds of
systems, and not a *single one* reports any problems like yours. I
run mailing lists that distribute several emails a day to several
hundred subscribers. Finally, I have several customers who use
songbird for their primary email, and *they* report no problems. I won't
say that it's impossible that something is wrong here at Songbird -- I've
been wrong before, but there is absolutely nothing unusual about your setup
-- it is completely standard, and very simple.

In short, I have reached a point where, barring useful information to
the contrary, I must assume that there is something unusual in
your configuration at home. That's why I am asking all these
questions -- if there is an answer to be found, it will be in the
details that you can send me...

Don't be silly, Jim. I was just being polite. I don't know you,
either, and I communicate with you in a familiar style. Strictly
speaking, "Jim Fleming" means no more to me than "IANA".

I unsubscribed you from gcboaters, because your vacation program was
responding to every mail, sending a notification back to the list.
You can resubscribe when you get back.
