To gcboaters, on May 12, 1997. I'm following Kent's suggestion to
introduce ourselves. However, I don't know who else is on this lest, and
maybe everyone except Kent already knows me. I started hiking in the
canyon in 1950. At roughly the same time, I met Bill Belknap (and his son,
Buzz, who presently publishes one of the river maps), followed by meeting
Dock Marston and Harvey Butchart. I hiked the canyon for many years,
sometimes with Harvey. Dock and I became good friends, and as a result I
started running the river in the early 1960's. For a long time I did this
on an air mattress, but the NPS eventually forbid me from continuing this
way. Then I got a boat and started to run my own trips. I've run almost
every year, and know the river very well. My trips are usually small. The
largest I've ever run had 9 people, and most of the time I run with between
4 and 6, all of whom have lots of experience. My trips get on the river
early, and we run without scouting any rapids except Hance, Crystal, and
Lava. Our daily run is usually over at about lunch time or a bit later,
and we make camp. Campsite selection is seldom a problem because we stop
early. Then we have the entire afternoon to do other things, such as
hiking, reading, dozing, etc. We divide up cooking the main meal. For
example, if our trip is 15 days long, and we have 5 people on it, each
person cooks 3 main meals for the entire party. Breakfast and lunch are
each individual's own responsibility. We usually take out at Pierce Ferry.
When Lake Mead is low, we float to Pierce, and when it is high, we pay for
a tow from Separation Canyon. I'm also active in other facets of the
river, and was a charter member of the Constituent Panel. I know many of
the NPS people who are involved, and also a fair number of the commercial
guides and commercial company owners. That's about it, but if anyone has
any questions, I'm more than happy to answer them. And, after you receive
this, why not drop me an email so that I know who everyone is. Bill Mooz
