Hey, folks, just thoght I'd take Leonard's advice and
introduce myself. This list is a great idea. Maybe if we can
liven it up, more openings will be made known or we will get
more active in pushing for rules changes that cater less to
commercial interests.
I'm a 43 yr old kayaker from N. Little Rock, Arkansas,
paddled the Canyon in 93 and have been on the list for 3
yrs.. I'm pretty well booked with paddling plans for 97, but
would love to get on a '98 permit. I can cook, am a really
crappy guitar player and am generally self-sufficient but
very helpful.I've been boating for 17 yrs. In short, the
near-perfect Canyon traveller. Drop me a line! See ya'

I had a chat with Pat Haddaway (GCNP River SubDistrict
Ranger) today.

Not too much to report, except that the update of where we
all are on the
list is still maybe a week away. The delay was due to the
reinstitution of
the "grace period." All those who did not send in their new
$25.00 waiting
list fee will remain on the list until next year's round of
continuing
interest letters. It they don't re-up then, Pat estimates
about 1200 people
will drop off the list (that's in 1998 folks). Even then, we
are still
looking at a list 5,000+ long. All the more reason to take
part in the
Colorado River Management Plan (CRMP) meetings this fall to
insist on a
larger user day allocation for the private sector -- or
better yet -- an
entirely different system based on launches and dates a la
the original
1970's preliminary plans.

Some of you have asked if I'm getting on the river this
year. The answer is
I just don't know yet. I missed two opportunities in June to
go on trips
because of previous work and family committments (bummer).
But I'd like to
maybe try for a September trip, yet don't have my ducks
lined up nor any
plans yet to go for a cancellation (does anyone?). And, I
don't know anyone
who actually has a September permit. Alas.

BTW, the list is incredibly quiet. If folks don't start
talking to one
another, I'm not sure if the list will help anyone find
and/or share trips.
We have about 65 people subscribed so far and only two have
introduced
themselves (although one of them got a cancellation in June
and is on the
river as I type this). FWIW, my info is on the list
managers' page at the
gcboaters site or at the Grand Canyon River Running site,
"http://river.ihs.gov"

If anyone is so inclined, drop a note to the list and
introduce yourself.
