As I came home for lunch today, I couldn't help but notice the
dozen or so communications towers that have sprung up to
disrupt the skyline of the hill upon which I live. Then I read
a call for "unobtrusive" cell phone towers in the Grand
Canyon. My trip down the Canyon in 1993 was remarkable to me
in that it was a grand adventure within the confines of the US
and a bit of an exercise in self-sufficiency. At Phantom
Ranch, I walked up to the phones, decided that nothing outside
could positively effect me, and walked back to my boat. I'm
all for safety, but please don't lobby to tie this great slice
of wilderness to the outside world. If you feel the need, rent
an aircraft radio, but leave the phones at home.
