Risks of Calling Out

The discussion about being able to use a cellular phone brings up the
risks of calling out. On June 29 my group was waiting at Phantom
Ranch for 3 boaters walking in to join our group. One of our party
called home, was informed of a family emergency involving missing
pets from Home. She was convinced that she was needed at Home to
solve/work on the problem. The people on the other end who had no
idea what was involved with changing plans, hiking out, etc.,etc.,
strongly requested that they fly Home. So...after a long discussion
with the group, told us they were leaving. Group members expressed
concerns for how that would affect the rest of us, would they be safe
(one of the hikers was diabetic) and so on. She and her significant
other changed into their hiking gear, loaded up with water for the
hike out. They did agree to sit in the shade until 4:00 PM before
heading up. The rest of us loaded up at 3:15 PM and headed off to a
campsite two people short (13 people on 5 boats at this point).

This is another area I recommend trip leaders talk over with their
group and ask people to think about under what sorts of circumstances
you might unexpectedly walk out. On my trip no refunds were expected
or given for leaving early. My recommendation would be to leave the
cell phones at home and think twice about calling out at Phantom. I
did make one personal call to a voicemail number that I had left as
an emergency way to get ahold of me. I did not want to talk to anyone
but did want to know if I was needed. I did not have any messages so
was saved having to think about under what conditions a trip leader
would leave a trip.

PS. The hikers made it to the rim in under 4 hours, got a room at the
lodge, flew out early and landed by 5 PM where they went straight Home
and solved the emergency within 45 minutes.
