Dear Charlie:
I am a resident of Las Vegas, and very familiar to Lake Mead. When I've done
the Grand, my group always takes out at Pierce Ferry. Diamond Creek is on
Indian Reservation land, and they charge for each person, each boat and each
vehicle. Also the road is terrible.
We always stop at Seperation Rapid, and a friend ferries an outboard up to us
there, via power boat. Then we tie all the rafts together, and motor on down
the 40 something miles to Pierce. It is noisy, but makes a laid back end to
the trip, as all boats and people are rafted up, and can reminisce at will.
The last trip, we had 4 rafts and 3 kayaks, and we used my little 9 horse
Johnson, it was slow, but sure beat rowing that stretch. Be sure to check
out the bat cave high above the river on river right about half way. It is
hugh, and old timers at one time tried to mine it for guano, but it was not
successful.
I have sea-kayaked the stretch just below Pierce, and there is a beautiful
little cove area called Gods Pocket that is truly unique.
Have a wonderful trip!
