Got back from my first river trip down the Colorado, and the next issue of
Natural History Magazine that arrived had, of all things, an aerial view
of Lava Falls on the cover. The issue has a great article on the
volcanology of the lower canyon. Very likely in recent geological time
"reservoirs" due to damming of the river by basalt flows have been a
fairly common occurrence. So if you're willing to take the million-year
perspective, Lakes Mead and Powell are not anomalies at all. Anyway, a
good article if you can find the magazine on a newsstand.
