The Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center recommended a full power
plant capacity "habitat maintenance" release for October 7,8, 1997. The 48
hour, 31,000 cfs flood flow would be used to mobilize sediments recently
washed into the system from the Paria River and to deposit these sediments
above the levels of expected winter flows. Late this afternoon, Bureau of
Reclamation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided to cancel the
planned 31,000 cfs flow, as conflicts exist over potential impacts to
endangered species. At least one week will be required to resolve the
potential impact. Users of the river below Glen canyon dam are reminded
that the predicted flow levels could change...
