My first river trip was in 1983. I hiked in at Havasu, and I knew only one
person out of the 15. it was great.
The last six gc trips I have been on, I knew only one other boatman. My
participation came about because somebody needed someone with a boat and
who hade gc experience. my contacts came about via telephone, we eached
asked a few questions about each others lifestyle...when we found they were
compatible, we agreed to "trip" together.
I gather some of you are the scientific types...one trip was made up of
scientific types from as far away as Colombia and Puerto Rico, biologists
of various varieties, they waited nine years. Another trip was made up,
mainly of NPS, yes NPS planners and engineers. They waited nine years also.
Another trip was put together by a fellow who even placed ad in a singles
newspaper for participants...this fellow almost turned in his permit, after
nine years, because every one who wanted to go had drifted away.
My point, being willing to take a chance has gotten me on some fantastic
trips...I long ago quit trying to write the trip script. Going on a trip
with those you don't know is an adventure...and it allows a level of
freedom one dosen't have while travelling with the "usual gang of idiot's"
You expect very little from those you don't know and they likewise. It
allows you the freedom to be yourself. No expectations. Sometimes, if you
want to go, you gotta say yes, instead of no.
