Actually, it is possible to transfer trip leader status to another boater in
mid-trip if that boater meets the requirements of being the leader. I'm aware
of one trip that did this a few years ago. Ask the rangers what the exact
wording of the codes they follow are... you might have to have special
circumstances... I think, that in the case I cited, that the trip leader's wife
was pregnant, and the kid didn't pay attention to its proscribed take-out
time... so to speak.
