U.S. Government Calls Net Names Meeting
The U.S. government has invited major Internet and telecommunications
companies to Washington D.C. on Wednesday to discuss the privatization of
the Net's domain name allocation system, according to people invited to the
meeting.
Domain names-such as www.techweb.com-are used to identify Web and e-mail
servers. At present, the U.S. government has overall responsibility for
most Internet domain names, but it licenses the right to allocate many
domain names to Herndon, Va.-based Network Solutions.
