I honestly don't know if you need a permit to hike out. The PArk service
will ask if anyone is hiking out or in at Phantom when you have your
orientation meeting at Lees Ferry.
I would recommend your friend hike in there and meet you at Phantom.
While I believe that Marble Canyon is extremely beautiful, possibly more
so then the Grand, the thought of hiking a vertical mile in the desert is
reason enough for me to hike in. In any event the Park service will
discourage your friend from hiking between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
That means he will have to leave Phantom at 4 am and stop at ( I believe
it's called ) Indian springs and lay over in the shade till the sun goes
down.
