Re: 33,000 cfs

I found lava to be more hair-raising this year than in my previous trips.
The right-run is non-existant. The left sneak run (at 22-24,000cfs) was
boney and I watched a kayaker vertically pin while running it. He said that
the foot pegs came loose, but watching from shore his bow hit bottom
downstream of a small pourover and he was stationary for 3-5 seconds... too
damn close to a vertical pin for me.

The run most folks were taking (and that I took) was a tongue that was
immediately (like 5') left of the left edge of the ledge hole. One raft (not
our float) missed his entry and got caught by the ledge hole, and was window
shaded and shredded. A passenger actually hung on while the raft did two
complete flips -- when it flipped over the third time she came loose. The
raft stayed in the ledge hole another two or three minutes, shedding ammo
boxes, coolers & finally came free whne most of the gear rigged on it came
loose. raft was a 16' hyside with three people -- boatman, two passengers
riding in front of the boatman. It was pretty amazing to watch that & then
run lava, but our groups runs where excellent.

At higher water I'd guess that the cheat run at the far left might be more
navigable, but there's a lot of unstable bank there to fall into and further
narrow your choices at lava.

When I was there (two weeks ago) we had had more rain than anyone could
remember. Crystal creek flashed, and most of the other canyons had new
(small) debris flows in front of them. So be careful and keep a close eye
out to make sure that you don't run across something truly surprising,
especially this year.
