Actually, I think his point was more like, you don't have to wait the whole
ten years for a permit. You could get a permit this year probably, if you
are willing to make certain choices, like quit your job, work double
overtime, close your practice etc. The ten year wait is for people whose
lifestyle choices don't allow them to put together a trip at a moment's
notice and who therefore must wait until their appointed scheduled launch
date comes up. But those are lifestyle CHOICES, and those people could cut
down on their wait time considerably by making different choices. I believe
this was his point. It is similar to one I made, so I think I get it. I
think another part of his point was that making the choices that he and his
friends did to go on their trip is indicative of the relative importance of
a Canyon trip versus say job security or financial gain to them. And maybe
likewise the decision of someone else NOT to quit their job to go on a trip
but to wait for their scheduled date is also indicative of the relative
importance of Canyon trip and job security to that person. The trip has a
higher relative importance to one than the other, and the person who puts
it higher on his list gets the trip this year, the other person waits ten
years. It's a matter of priorities, but it is fundamentally people choosing
their own priorities. I think that's kind of what he meant (Bill, correct
me if I misinterpreted your comments). This is all in the context of a
limited resource and not everybody can just go whenever they want.

Chris, if you really really want a Canyon trip in less than ten years, get
on the horn and start calling for a cancellation. I've been calling a lot
this year - I've been offered 3 different cancellation dates. I didn't take
any of them because they didn't fit my schedule. But that's my decision. I
put finishing my thesis ahead of going on these trips. But, the trips were
there and I could have gone. (Now that I have time, of course, I can't seem
to get a date to save my life - some corollary to Murphy's Law at work
here, I guess.)

Cheers, Judy
