If folks in PAB are concern about feeling left out, or otherwise wishing
that they had more leverage on the events in Washington, let me again
remind people that your many countries and organizations are largely being
ignored by the politicians in Washington.
The current situation is the result of very strong lobby against the gTLD
Mou effort by a very small group of people. In contrast, those who support
the gTLD MoU have signed up in support and have assumed that such a list of
signatories would be meaningful. In my opinion, Magaziner and folks in
Congress give very little weight to your signatures.
Instead they are listening to a few voices that are lobbying quite hard --
on a daily basis -- for restricting CORE, for having lots of CORE
competitors, for allowing NSI to have for-profit control over the
com/net/org data bases, and for keeping DNS control strictly within the
United States.
If you want to balance the scales more, you need to take individual action,
and you need to have your countries take individual action.
Contrary to the often-voiced misrepresentations of the critics, the gTLD
MoU process HAS been open and HAS been responsive to input. This is very
much in contrast to NSI and in contrast to all the other non-existent
efforts that people tout but do not pursue.
