Actually, ASCAP, BMI, and SOCAN are considered PRS's (Those three letter
acronyms. hmmm...), or rather, Performance Rights Societies. they are the entity
that collects the money for the "Performance" of an (and here it is again)
"Intellectual Property" that is copyrighted by a Publisher (copyright
organiation?); while the mechanical royalties are collected either directly by
the publisher from the record label (entity that presses the CD's and hold's
copyright on the recording) or by the Harry Fox Agency on behalf of the
publisher for a fee.

But still, given this definition, a good analogy such as yours only becomes
clearer as to why ASCAP would have a vested interest in an organization dealing
with IP (Intellectual Property). Is it a hands down that they're not a grass
roots organization like us? More like Top-Down?
