Dear Bruce:
I agree with Len that you were incredibly lucky to have a physician, a motor
rig pull up, and contact with a plane in an hour. Getting a distress call
out can be a real problem. That is why the group I run with decided last
year to buy an EPIRB. It is a handy little package that emits a satillite
signal distress call and can be heard all over the world. I don't have the
exact specs on me at the moment, but they WORK. Last year we ran across a
commercial company that had a serious injury, and were trying mirrors, radios
etc. A woman passanger had gone over the bow of the boat, and been chewed up
pretty bad by the engine prop. We lent them our EPIRB and they had contact
very quickly, and evaced the woman out by copter. The next day the guide
caught up with up to return the unit, and gave our stalwart leader a giant
and heart-felt bear hug!
I am a boat dealer in Las Vegas, and would be happy to send any one that
requests it more info, and where you can order one. They run about $300. ,
but the incident last year more than paid for it in my peace of mind. Lots
of long distance sailors use these things on their boats (I am a sailor too.)
and they are even required equipment on some long distance races.
I too hope that your friend Kurt continues to have a full and compleat
recovery.
I am having an after the river party tonight and plan on bringing this up
with my group, will let you know what the concenses is later.
One note of condolence, once something like this happens on a river trip, the
lessons you learn are the ones that make you a better river runner and
person.
So, thank YOU for sharing.
