This information about epirbs and emergency radios and so on brings to
mind a perennial minor ethical dilemma: On my last trip, on a whim, I
took a new toy with me, a Garmin handheld GPS receiver (I also do a
little sailing). And at every campsite I took a reading:

nite GPS lat/lon Landmark
--------------------------------------------------
0 036.51.967, 111.35.190 Lee's Ferry
1 036.38.871, 111.45.668 18 mile
2 036.30.972, 111.50.879 Below Fence Fault
3 036.23.179, 111.50.845 Eminence
4 036.17.784, 111.51.607 Lower Nankoweap
5 036.04.028, 111.53.396 Tabernacle
6 036.02.953, 111.54.171 Below Nevills
7 036.06.488, 112.13.531 96 mile ?
8 036.12.937, 112.25.457 114 Above Garnet Canyon
9 036.20.835, 112.27.211 Stone Creek
10 036.23.587, 112.31.410 Backeddy
11 036.20.283, 112.41.005 148.5 Below Matkat
12 036.17.719, 112.47.428 Below Havasu
13 036.14.197, 113.00.958 174 Cove Canyon
14 036.05.665, 113.19.360 Parashant Wash
15 035.47.155, 113.20.582 224 mile

Suppose that there was big list of the coordinates for useful or
interesting locations in the Canyon. Would you, as a trip leader,
stash that list with your epirb and your Stevens guide, and carry a
GPS receiver? Or, to make the ethical point a little more extreme,
suppose the NPS decided to put a network of cell phone transceivers
along the River Corridor -- tastefully concealed, of course, and
unobtrusive, like the little river guage thingies.

Would you carry a cell phone?
