Dear everyone:
Great discussion! It is invigorating to hear so many different viewpoints
and realize that there are still people who are willing to put themselves out
there, if only in print, to argue for their beliefs.
Just a couple of points, here. I am a private boater, and on every river I
have been on , I have been commended by the reviewing ranger for the ( in
excess) quality and quantity of my equipment and experience. I practice
excessive minimal impact camping, and am proud of it. When I leave a beach,
I really do leave only footprints. I agree that being a good example is a
valuable tool to others. And I hope that my example has done some good.
Thank God that I have never met the privates that Judy talks about.
Re: the late night fractures that occure when peeing. I carry a small
coffee can, with a baby biener, and fiberglass resined. It is clearly
identified as my P can. and stands guard duty outside my tent every night.
When the urge imerges at maybe 2 am, just use the trusty P can, and put the
lid on, and put it outside the tent to be emptied in the river in the
morning. I think that this can should be required river equipment, just like
fire pans. (But then again, if you ever used one, you would never go on a
river without it. ) This may not be the earth shaking views that have been
bandied about so far, but I do believe that little things are important. And
I am still listening and learning about all the rest.
One last....I am one of those people who can pick up and run the river at the
drop of a hat, and will do so willingly at any time. I own my own business,
and when I am gone, I have NO revenue. But I believe that the trade out is
worth it. And I think I finally have my customers trained. Now they don't
ask why I wasn't here, they ask for pictures and stories of my river trips.
Vicarious thrills, just another way I contribute to the status quo.
